Wegovy (semaglutide) has helped thousands of people lose weight safely and effectively, but as its use becomes more widespread, many people are asking an important question:
Can Wegovy affect bone density or increase the risk of broken bones?

The short answer is reassuring. Current clinical evidence does not show that Wegovy directly weakens bones or increases the risk of fractures. Does Wegovy directly weaken bones?

No evidence that semaglutide causes osteoporosis.

Why can weight loss affect bone health?

Reduced mechanical loading
Bones respond to the forces placed upon them.
Carrying more body weight places greater stress on the skeleton, encouraging bones to remain strong. As weight decreases, bones experience less mechanical loading, meaning they receive less stimulation to maintain bone mass.
This is a normal physiological response and is not unique to Wegovy.

Could eating less affect bone strength?

Does Wegovy increase the risk of fractures?
Based on current research, there is no evidence that Wegovy increases fracture risk.

Include calcium-rich foods such as dairy products, fortified alternatives and leafy green vegetables where appropriate.
Maintain healthy vitamin D levels
Follow current UK guidance on vitamin D supplementation, particularly during autumn and winter or if advised by your healthcare professional.
Stay active
Regular weight-bearing exercise such as walking, alongside resistance or strength training two or three times each week, helps maintain both muscle and bone strength.
Lose weight at a steady pace
Rapid weight loss is more likely to contribute to muscle loss than gradual, sustainable weight reduction.

Current evidence suggests that Wegovy does not directly reduce bone density or weaken bones.
Instead, any potential effects on bone health are more likely to arise indirectly through significant weight loss, reduced nutritional intake, loss of muscle mass and lower mechanical loading of the skeleton.
Fortunately, these risks can usually be minimised by eating a balanced diet with adequate protein, calcium and vitamin D, remaining physically active and following your clinician's advice throughout treatment.
For most people, the health benefits of achieving and maintaining a healthier weight with Wegovy are expected to outweigh any potential impact on bone health, particularly when treatment is combined with good nutrition and regular exercise.
